The Gallatin Ice Foundation, in conjuction with the Fair Board, has applied for Open Space Bond funds from the County for $500,000. A portion of the funds would help in part to fund rink improvements. The County Commissioners have not yet voted on appropriating this money. It would be extremely helpful for BAHA members to voice their support of the application. Provided below are three sample letters. Feel free to use one of them or draft your own. You can e-mail your support to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  or mail to Gallatin County Commission, 311 W Main, Room 300, Bozeman, MT 59715. Thank you for your support!

Sample Letter 1

Date: April 25, 2008

To: Commissioner Joe Skinner
     Commissioner Bill Murdoch
     Commissioner Steve White

From:

Subject: Fairgrounds Open Space

Dear Commissioners:

I am writing this letter to support designating the Fairgrounds under the Open Space Act.   What better way to preserve open space in the heart of Bozeman for future generations?  The vision statement of the Open Lands boards clearly states, "The Gallatin County Open Lands boards seeks to preserve open space lands for the enjoyment of present and future generations. The diverse acreage includes rich agriculture lands, Serene Mountain settings, parks, unique wildlife habitats, streams and lakes, historic areas and trail corridors." My understanding is the Fairgrounds is the oldest park in the county and has been tied to the history of the Gallatin County since the early 1900's.

It is also important that the commissioners support the grant request of $500,000.00 to support the Ice Facility upgrades and the new master plan for the Fairgrounds that also includes trails and more green space. With a little help from the commissioners we can insure that the Fairgrounds will stay where it is, preserve open space in the heart of Bozeman, help the Ice Community, support youth activity, jump-start the new master plan for the Fairgrounds, and drive positive economic activity.

In my opinion this is a good use of the bond funds.  If it is not used in this manner I also believe that the voters in the future will be less favorable for future Open Space Bond measures.

Sincerely,

From:

Subject: Fairgrounds Open Space

Dear Commissioners:

As a person that operates a business in Gallatin County I am in support of the Fairgrounds being designated under the Open Space Act and the use of $500,000.00 of the Open Space Bond money going to support the Fairgrounds. My belief is that the stronger the Fairgrounds are, the better economic opportunities there are in Gallatin County. The Fairgrounds already has 300,000 visitors per year.  With a little help from the commissioners we can insure that the Fairgrounds will stay were it is, preserve open space in the heart of Bozeman, help the Ice Community, support youth activity, jump-start the new master plan for the Fairgrounds, and drive positive economic activity.

By not supporting the designation and the grant money I also believe you put future Open Space Bond measures at risk of being voted down.

Sincerely,

Dear Commissioners:

As a person/business that has donated to the Gallatin Ice Foundation.  I encourage you to support the designation of the Fairgrounds under the Open Space Act and the use of $500,000 Open Space Bond money.   I also believe by the County showing support for this project it further supports the Gallatin Ice Foundation Fundraising efforts.
By not supporting the designation and the grant money I also believe you put future Open Space Bond measures at risk of being voted down.

Sincerely,
