Enjoyment and recreational benefits were chief among USA Hockey's Board of Directors' motivations for recently issuing new youth hockey guidelines. Registered teams play in the classifications of:
- 8-and-Under (Termite/Mite)
- 10-and-Under (Squirt)
- 12-and-Under (Pee Wee)
- 14-and-Under (Bantam)
- 16-and-Under (Midget)
- 18-and-Under (Midget and High School)
The USA Hockey-recommended guidelines for youth hockey encourage a noncompetitive environment in which children can learn the basic skills without the distractions that are often associated with an overemphasis on winning.

Termite and Mite Hockey is a 8 and under program designed to teach young players the fundamentals of skating and how to have fun doing it. These leagues are exciting for kids interested in hockey and are a no-pressure program. Coach Jimmy has been coaching kids this age for more than 15 years – he makes it fun while teaching kids to skate. He understands a young player’s attention span and is extremely patient with young athletes. Even kids who are apprehensive about hockey love coming back – because getting kids back is Jimmy’s goal with each practice. Hockey is a dynamic sport and these young kids really progress in their athletic ability over the season – you’ll be amazed. - 10-and-under Recommendations
